  13. 1. ABOUT THIS RELEASE
  14. ==================
  15. Thank you for downloading the 29th packaged release of iTop.
  16. It is a beta version, so the new features may not be fully operational.
  17. The documentation about iTop is available as a Wiki at: https://wiki.openitop.org/
  18. iTop is released under the AGPL (v3) license. (Check license.txt in this directory).
  19. The source code of iTop can be found on SourceForge: https://sourceforge.net/p/itop/code/
  20. 1.1 What's new?
  21. -----------
  22. It will bring three main new features:
  23. • Transition forms: iTop allows now to define per transition, which fields are displayed and required, independently on the console and on each portal.
  24. Archiving
  25. ---------
  26. Addressing performance issue in case of large databases.
  27. Archiving objects is equivalent to a “soft delete”.
  28. Archived objects are ignored by the application as if they had been truly deleted.
  29. Nevertheless, they are still accessible through a special mode of the console (read-only).
  30. As long as no class is defined with archive enable, no change/menu appear in iTop related to that feature.
  31. A Ticket archiving module will be published in parallel of iTop, as an example.
  32. Obsolescence
  33. ------------
  34. Based on user preference, objects which became useless, are removed from displayed data.
  35. Rules of obsolescence are defined per class in the Data Model.
  36. Lifecycle
  37. ---------
  38. Lifecycle was enriched with the possibility to define flags on transition. It was possible to define actions during a transition.
  39. Now, you can force a field to be changed or documented during a particular transion, for example
  40. "caller must be changed during re-assign" and at the same time, be "read-only in the assigned state" and "not prompted during a reopen".
  41. Enhanced portal
  42. ---------------
  43. A new Search Brick is now available.
  44. Forms can be defined specifically for a particular transition. Flags for each field on that form can be redefined.
  45. A new mosaic mode was added to the Browse Brick, allowing to display an icon associated with the browsed objects.
  46. The Tree mode was enhanced to display a description under the object name, and default action was changed
  47. Manage Brick can display a count of object on each tab.
  48. Form display mode was enriched with: labels and values displayed side by side, with values aligned or not.
  49. 1.2 Should I upgrade to 2.4 beta?
  50. -----------------------------
  51. No, we don't recommend you to upgrade any production machine with this version.
  52. It is a beta version, not safe to be used in production mode.

  79. 2. INSTALLATION
  80. ============
  81. 2.1. Requirements
  82. ------------
  83. Server configuration:
  84. iTop is based on the AMP (Apache / MySQL / PHP) platform and requires PHP 5.3.6 and
  85. MySQL 5. The installation of iTop does not require any command line access to the
  86. server. The only operations required to install iTop are: copying the files to the
  87. server and browsing web pages. iTop can be installed on any web server supporting
  88. PHP 5.3.6: Apache, IIS, nginx...
  89. End-user configuration:
  90. Although iTop should work with most modern web browsers, the application has been
  91. tested mostly with Firefox 36+, IE9+, Safari 5 and Chrome. iTop was designed for
  92. at least a 1024x768 screen resolution.
  93. 2.2. Install procedure
  94. -----------------
  95. 1) Make sure that you have a properly configured instance of Apache/PHP/MySQL running
  96. 2) Unpack the files contained in the zipped package, and copy the content of the "web"
  97. directory in a directory served by your web server.
  98. 3) Check the access rights on the files/folders: the setup needs to have write access
  99. either to the directory where iTop is installed or to the following subdirectories
  100. (create them if needed)
  101. - conf
  102. - data
  103. - env-production
  104. - log
  105. 4) Point your web browser to the URL corresponding to the directory where the files
  106. have been unzipped and follow the indications on the screen.
  107. If you wish to re-launch the installation process (for example in order to install
  108. more modules), just make sure that the configuration file (located at <itop>/conf/production/config-itop.php)
  109. is writable by the web server (on Windows: remove the "read-only" flag, on Linux
  110. adjust the rights of the file) and point your browser to <itop>/setup/.
  111. 2.3. cron.php
  112. --------
  113. The following features will require the activation of CRON.PHP:
  114. - asynchronous emails. By default, this option is disabled. To enable it, set 'email_asynchronous' to 1 in the configuration file.
  115. - check ticket SLA. Tickets reaching the limits will be passed into Escalation TTO/TTR states.
  116. More information into the Wiki: https://wiki.openitop.org/doku.php?id=latest:admin:cron
  117. You can get a status of the cron "tasks" with the command:
  118. php cron.php --auth_user=admin_login --auth_pwd=admin_pwd --status_only=1
  119. The output will look as shown below:
  120. +---------------------------+---------+---------------------+---------------------+--------+-----------+
  121. | Task Class | Status | Last Run | Next Run | Nb Run | Avg. Dur. |
  122. +---------------------------+---------+---------------------+---------------------+--------+-----------+
  123. | CheckStopWatchThresholds | active | 2013-03-28 10:32:27 | 2013-03-28 10:32:37 | 51 | 0.317 s |
  124. | EmailBackgroundProcess | active | 2013-03-28 10:32:27 | 2013-03-28 10:32:57 | 12 | 7.089 s |
  125. | ExecAsyncTask | active | 2013-03-28 10:32:27 | 2013-03-28 10:32:29 | 51 | 0.032 s |
  126. +---------------------------+---------+---------------------+---------------------+--------+-----------+
  127. 2.4. Upgrading from 2.x.x
  128. --------------------
  129. The version 2.3.4 if fully compatible with 2.0.0, 2.0.1, 2.0.2, 2.0.3, 2.1.0, 2.2.0, 2.2.1, 2.3.1 and 2.3.3.
  130. Due to few database changes and new modules/files that have to be installed, you
  131. MUST run the setup when upgrading (whatever the original version).
  132. If the location of mysql binaries is in the "path", the setup proposes to perform a full backup
  133. of iTop (database + configuration file) using mysqldump.
  134. Here is how to upgrade, step by step, a 2.x.x instance of iTop:
  135. 1) Do NOT overwrite the files from the previous version. Expand the content of the "web" directory of
  136. the new package into a new directory on the web server.
  137. 2) Check the access rights on the files/folders: the setup needs to have write access either to the
  138. whole directory where iTop is installed or to the following subdirectories (create them if needed)
  139. - conf
  140. - data
  141. - env-production
  142. - log
  143. 3) Point your web browser to the URL corresponding to the new location. You should see the setup screen.
  144. 4) When prompted (At step 2 of the installation), choose "Upgrade an existing instance"
  145. 5) Either enter the path (on the disk) to the previous instance, or supply the needed credentials.
  146. 6) Run the setup to completion. Once this is done you can connect to your upgraded iTop.
  147. 7) To replace the old instance of iTop with the newly installed one:
  148. Rename the directories to switch the locations
  149. Edit the new configuration file (now located at <itop>/conf/production/config-itop.php) and change the
  150. value of the "application_url" parameter.
  151. 2.5. Migrating from 1.x versions
  152. ---------------------------
  153. The setup is designed to upgrade existing 1.x instances of iTop automatically. In case the instance was
  154. customized (for example by altering its data model), the installation process will detect the modifications
  155. (by scanning the source files and comparing them with the manifest) and will prompt either to keep the
  156. modifications or to discard them.
  157. If the location of mysql binaries is in the "path", the installation proposes to perform a full backup
  158. of iTop (database + configuration file) using mysqldump.
  159. Here is how to upgrade, step by step, a 1.x instance of iTop.
  160. 1) Do NOT overwrite the files from the previous version. Expand the content of the "web" directory of
  161. the new package into a new directory on the web server.
  162. 2) Check the access rights on the files/folders: the setup needs to have write access either to the
  163. directory where iTop is installed or to the following subdirectories (create them if needed)
  164. - conf
  165. - data
  166. - env-production
  167. - log
  168. 3) Point your web browser to the URL corresponding to the new location. You should see the setup screen.
  169. 4) When prompted (At step 2 of the installation), choose "Upgrade an existing instance"
  170. 5) Enter the needed credentials. It is not mandatory to supply the location (on the disk of the server)
  171. where the previous instance was installed but, by doing so, you let the installation find the credentials
  172. (by looking at the previous configuration file) and also perform additional checks, for instance, to
  173. detect any customization that you may have made to iTop.
  174. 6) Run the setup to completion. Once this is done you can connect to your upgraded iTop.
  175. 7) To replace the old instance of iTop with the newly installed one:
  176. Rename the directories to switch the locations
  177. Edit the new configuration file (now located at <itop>/conf/production/config-itop.php) and change the
  178. value of the "application_url" parameter.
  179. That's it.
  180. 3.1. Known limitations (https://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/itop/report/3)
  181. -----------------
  182. #71 The same MySQL credentials are used during the setup and for running the application.
  183. Some types of attributes (AttributeDuration, AttributeBlob) are always displayed as read-only in the Enhanced Portal.
  184. Suhosin can interfere with iTop. More information can be found here: http://www.combodo.com/wiki/doku.php?id=admin:suhosin
  185. Internet Explorer 6 is not supported (neither IE7 nor IE8 in compatibility mode)
  186. Tested with IE9, Firefox 3.6 up to Firefox 50 and Chrome.
